Great for lift loading, counterproductive for teaching

I used Lucky Bums to teach my son skiing. It consists of two parts. The first part is a harness with a handle, which is so sturdy that one can use it to lift a 5-6 year old off the ground, if needed, to help him to move around or to load the lift. I felt it was a nice safety add-on to have such a "handle" on your child. The second part is a long leash. The idea of this leash is to enable the parent to slow down and perhaps even "steer" the child and to prevent run-aways. While the idea is great, the execution is poor. There is nothing worse that pulling a child back at his chest level. For one thing, ski bindings do not release straight backwards. It is rather hard to maintain exact same speed as the child, especially when the child starts moving and the parent waits until the child moves the leash's length from him. If the child gets to some speed by that point, leashes can create quite a strong pull and can cause a backwards fall without binding release. The second issue is that pulling the child backwards puts him in a "rear seat" position. This is a very bad habit which, if engraved into muscle memory from early childhood, will take forever to get rid of. I tried Lucky Bums as designed several times and was disappointed. Fortunately, a friend of mine offered me a home-made leashes which attach to child's boots. I am glad to hear that Amazon carries the same design now, "CoPilot Ski Trainer Learn-to-Ski Harness to Teach Kids to Ski". That design is way, way better. The child maintains the correct, balanced to weight forward position, and in case of a rapid jerk in the leash (happened to me a couple of times), bindings release and the child falls forward without injury. My solution was to combine Lucky Bum's harness for the sake of its handle, and leashes attached to the boots to slow down the kid.

Fantastic...can take kid anywhere
By T. K. Rains on January 24, 2010

Although I was initially skeptical of this item, as I have a true disdain for "leash-for-kids" products, I must highly praise this ski trainer. Last year, it got my 3 yr. old skiing on his own, intermediate slope capability, in about 3 weekends. We passed it down to his 18-month old sister, and were able take her on all the blues and greens for the rest of the season. This year, she is 2.5, and just started making her first solo, no-string turns in January. I highly recommend this product if you want a quick, cry/whine-free introduction to skiing. As a parent, the ski trainer allows me to bring my children wherever I wish on the mountain (no diamonds of course), offering freedoms that are sorely missed when you are confined to the bunny slope with a kid between your legs. Even with bulky mittens, the pack and strings are simple to attach and stow. Well done Lucky Bums.

Works great for the littlest ones
By C. Fischer on November 9, 2009

When my 2 year old was learning, I skied next to her with my hand loosely on the handle -- allowed her to control her own skis, but as soon as she started to fall, I would just pick her up, stop for a second to let her get her legs straight, and continue on. Zero hard falls kept the fun factor high, and she pretty quickly learned to keep her skis straight -- never used edgie-wedgies.

The products that just feature harnesses without the handle wouldn't allow this.

Plus -- as she got older, the "cool" factor of having a backpack like mommy & daddy helped us convince her to keep using it.

I have been using these for my son(age 4) since the beginning of the season. They have done wonders for his muscle memory. My niece(age 5) and nephew(age 4) have been struggling with keeping skis straight so i just bought them each a set. I would rec to anyone who is trying to teach a young child to ski

Great product for teaching!
By NA on March 10, 2014

Prior to buying this product, my 4 year old had been in ski lessons multiple times but was hating to ski since he was not learning to turn or snowplow very well and getting frustrated. I purchased this product to see if it would help and after one hour of him skiing with me on the bunny hill with this, he was able to graduate to greens and follow me without any problems. By the end of the day he was able to ski without using the wedge product and he didn't want to go home!

This is a great product and I would recommend it to anyone with small children that are learning to ski.

Worthless

Fell apart within the first few runs. The clear rubber gripper fell off one of the clips making it useless. While it was working it wasn't very helpful. Waste of time and money.
